UPDATE: Stolen cables not the reason for no water in Bethal

She advised residents to be prepared for a weekend without water.

It appears as if the stolen electricity cables are not the reason for Bethal’s dried up taps, but rather Govan Mbeki Municipality’s failure to pay Rand Water.

“Although the stolen cables effect the pumps, there is no water to pump, even if the stolen cables are replaced,” said Ms Marietjie Fourie, DA Councillor.

The main reservoir that supplies water to Bethal, is now also empty.

This comes after Ms Fourie spoke to a senior official at Rand Water who confirmed that Rand Water reduced the water supply to 60 per cent because of municipality’s failure to pay.

“Govan Mbeki Municipality’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) could not confirm this as he could not get hold of Rand Water’s CFO,” said Ms Fourie.

“The municipality’s CFO will give me feedback by Monday 12pm.

“The regional manager will request two trucks to distribute and supply water to the community.”

She advised residents to be prepared for a weekend without water.
