Studio Shalom close doors after nearly 30 years

Mother and daughter thank clients and schools for loyal support

SECUNDA – Studio Shalom will be closing its doors after being in the photography industry for nearly 30 years.

Ms Sarie van der Berg who opened the studio in 1990, said Secunda was good to them.

She and her daughter, Ms Sarina Pretorius, who began working at the studio after her matric year, will soon be moving to Middelburg in the Karoo soon.

“I am ready for this new chapter in my life,” said Ms Pretorius who will be living with her husband, Mr Derick Pretorius, on a farm near Middelburg in the Eastern Cape.

Ms Van der Berg’s career as a photographer began in Sasolburg when she worked for Mardo Photos.

She and her late husband, Mr Joe van der Berg lived in Sasolburg for 12 years before moving to Secunda when Ms Pretorius was in grade 2.

Ms Van der Berg worked for Brandspruit Mine in the housing department before opening her own business, Studio Shalom.

She retired from Studio Shalom nine years ago when Mr Van der Berg died of cancer.

Ms Pretorius will be trying her hand at farming when the family moves to the Karoo.

“I have always loved animals,” said Ms Pretorius.

Her mother taught her everything she knows about photography and her father taught her how to frame photos.

Ms Van der Berg has four children and eight grandchildren. In her free time she enjoys gardening, going to the gym and helping with picture framing at the studio.

Ms Pretorius has three children and in her free time she enjoys hiking and playing squash.

This mother-and-daughter-team thanked their clients for their loyal support over the years as well as all the schools in Secunda, Bethal, Evander, and Standerton where they took school photos.
