Voter registration disrupted in Leandra as voting stations close for safety reasons
Residents are unsure if registration points in Leandra will open tomorrow, 27 January
LEANDRA – Members of the Zamokuhle Taxi Association in Leandra allegedly prevented potential voters from registering at 13 voting stations in the Leandra area today.
They apparently want the government to intervene in their feud with Vukanini Taxi Association (Vukta) from eMbalenhle.
IEC officials and representatives from the various political parties were thought to be under threat and the IEC closed the voting stations.
It is alleged that some IEC material was also taken.
Ms Ciska Jordaan, caucus leader of the DA, participated in a meeting with the IEC, the police and other stakeholders this afternoon to discuss the problem.
“There was decided that the Govan Mbeki Municipality’s leadership, several MEC’s and the taxi association find a solution. The outcome will determine what will happen at the voting station tomorrow.”
Mr James Masango, MPL of the DA, said this action was politically motivated.
