eMBALENHLE – Residents of Extension 18 are tired of repeatedly reporting the same sewage problem to the Govan Mbeki Municipality.
They said they have lost count of how many times the matter had been reported to the municipality.
The residents claim the sewage has been overflowing since 2011 and that this has resulted in some residents allegedly contracting sewage-related illnesses such as diarrhoea and infections.
“The municipality should take immediate action as children often play in the sewage and get sick.”
Ms Annita Mkhwebane, DA Councillor, said that she will intervene, but the municipality is turning a blind eye to the matter.
“I personally spoke to Mr Robert Mashiane the regional manager, in 2017 and even accompanied him to the problem, but still nothing has been done.
“The time has come for the municipality to fix this.”
The residents also complained about the water interruptions that took place over the weekend of Friday, 25 January.
“Although the municipality issued the notice, water interruptions are now a norm in our area.”
According to Mr Benzi Soko, Chief of Staff, the water interruptions were due to the valve replacement at the Adullam Reservoir inlet and vandalised outlet.
He insisted that the water had been restored and that locals are now receiving water.
