The Standerton Advertiser published an article on its front page last week about the Lekwa Municipality’s financial situation going so far as to say, liquidation is on the cards.
Ms Sithi Silosini, DA councillor deployed in Ward 3, was quoted.
The newspaper undertook to scrutinise the agenda of a recent council meeting and can unequivocally confirm that the municipality faces liquidity problems (page 3 of agenda).
The report of the executive mayor and municipal manager states that Lekwa is unable to meet their payment obligations to Eskom, water boards and other creditors.

“There is a need for the municipality to focus on collecting revenues owed to it, and eliminate wasteful and non-core spending,”
The draft IDP review for 2019/2020 was submitted at the meeting and the DA voted against it.
The information came to light after conditions at the dumpsite were highlighted and subsequent criminal charges brought against the mayor, Mr Linda Dhlamini, and municipal manager, Ms Gugu Mhlongo-Ntshangase.
Ms Silosini requested in an affadavit on 15 January last year that the top brass violated legislation by dumping refuse and waste on an open space of land.
The communications manager of the municipality, Ms Thobeka Mtshiselwa, denied any knowledge of liquidation on 26 April.
