Lions Club in Standerton inducts new president
Mr Henri thanked Mr Parkes for his leadership despite health problems and his wife, Phyllis, received a certificate in recognition of her service.
The Lions Club of Standerton held their induction dinner for the new president on Saturday, 20 July with the customary adherence to protocol and a good lunch.
Mr Tim Cochrane took over the reins from Mr Les Parkes who quite wittingly began his speech with ‘Showtime’.
The master of ceremonies, Mr Donovon Henri, introduced the different speakers, with Mr Niel Havenaar giving the Lions Pledge followed by a toast to the Republic of South Africa.
Lion Arthur Baines welcomed the guests before starters were served consisting of a hearty beef soup and fresh bread rolls.
After the main course of potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli and sweet potato with a creamy, herb chicken as well as dessert, the Lions got on to serious business and afforded Mr Cochrane the opportunity to deliver his speech.
Lion Cliff Hocking and his wife, Jacqui, represented Lions International for the formal induction.
Mr Henri thanked Mr Parkes for his leadership despite health problems and his wife, Phyllis, received a certificate in recognition of her service.
Mr Henri was awarded the accolade of Lion of the Year and admitted aside that he did not expect such an award.
“The Lions are one of the few organisations where money ends up on root level,” he concluded.
