Bethal mob beat alleged thief

An eyewitness said that a whole group of people grabbed hold of the suspect and began to beat him.

BETHAL – A man was arrested on Saturday, 28 September after he tried to steal another man’s bank card at the ATM.

Fortunately, the victim quickly realised what was happening and gave chase.

An eyewitness said that a whole group of people grabbed hold of the suspect and began to beat him.

The security guard of one of the stores called over the radio for help. The local police later showed up.

“The people were so angry that they wanted to take justice into their own hands. A security guard hid the man inside one of the stores until the police showed up. He stole the wrong man’s card that day,” an eyewitness said.

When the suspect was searched, a pack of bank cards were apparently found on him.

Const Thomas Mogadime, spokesman for Bethal Police, said the man was detained and appeared in Bethal Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 30 September.
