DA conducts oversight visit to local police stations

The reason for the visit was to ascertain whether they have the rape kits for minors and adults as well as the necessary resources to fight gender-based violence.

Ms Angel Khanyile, DA member of parliament, and Ms Sithi Silosini recently conducted an oversight visit to the Sakhile and Standerton Police Stations.

According to Ms Khanyile, they discovered the police are responsible for Pixley kaSeme Municipality as well.

The reason for the visit was to ascertain whether they have the rape kits for minors and adults as well as the necessary resources to fight gender-based violence.

“They have a victim empowerment centre, without staff support,” she said.

She added that both stations have rape kits, but no buccal swabs (to collect DNA from the inside of a person’s cheek), which delays most investigations.

Ms Kanyile concluded by saying the shortage of vehicles remains a stumbling block.
