Join walk against human trafficking this Saturday

Support good cause by registering to walk 5km on Satruday

SECUNDA – Residents who want to stand up against human trafficking, can show their support on Saturday, 19 October by taking part in the international A21 organisation’s walk.

This walk will take place for the first time in Secunda this year and is already established in 50 countries and 450 towns.

The aim of this 5km walk is to take a stand against the issue of human trafficking, also known as modern-day slavery.

The 5km walk on Saturday will begin at 8.30am at the Kruik Church.

Participants can still register online or on the morning of the walk from 7.30am.

Ms Nadia Heyns, organiser of the walk, said it is important that people register beforehand.

After the walk, participants can ask questions about the A21 organisation and human trafficking.

Ms Heyns took the initiative to organise such a walk in Secunda after she heard of the A21 organisation for the first time in 2016 and decided to take hands with them.

It is estimated that 248 700 people are enslaved in South Africa and about 40.3 million worldwide.

“I realised there was a need to create awareness of human trafficking, especially in South Africa, many people are not aware of human trafficking,” said Ms Heyns.

She took part in the A21 walk held in Pretoria last year to see how things are done and then decided to bring it to Secunda.

The A21 walk for freedom will take place for the sixth time globally and the third time in South Africa this year.

Ms Heyns’ goal for this walk in Secunda is that at least 150 people will take part in the walk.

She manned a stall at Secunda Mall on Saturday, 12 October, to create awareness and give people a chance to register for the walk and at least 80 people, including her volunteers, already registered to take part in the walk.

All participants must wear a Walk for Freedom T-shirt or a plain black T-shirt.

For more information, visit the Facebook page, A Team Secunda or A21’s website at www.a21.org.

You can also buy a T-shirt for R120 to show your support.

The T-shirts are available at Faith4U Bookstore at the Kruik Church.
