Back Megan by taking part in Graceland’s golf challenge
The golf day for Megan will be played in a better ball format. The tee-off begin with a shotgun start at 8am.
SECUNDA – Graceland Country Club is hosting a golf day on 11 December to raise money for a four-year-old girl with severe scoliosis.
Megan van Rheede van Oudsthoorn is suffering from a rare and extreme case of progressive congenital scoliosis.
This is where the spine curves abnormally in either an “S” shape or a “C” shape.
Children born or later diagnosed with this condition has a spinal curve of about 30 degrees, but in Megan’s case her spinal curve was greater than 90 degrees.
After medical evaluation, it was confirmed that Megan requires surgical intervention to stabilise the spine and to prevent any further progressive deformity.
The biggest risk is that the spine now pushes against her heart and lungs and prevents normal growth of these vital organs which will lead to further problems if she does not get the surgery done as soon as possible. Her family has no medical aid.
The cost to do the surgery is about R600 000 and that does not include the aftercare and the special bed and equipment that she will need after surgery.
She will need a special brace to hold the spine in position and also need physiotherapy until the muscles adjusted to full capacity again.
The aim is to get this very needed operation done by June 2020 as it gets worst as she grows.
The golf day for Megan will be played in a better ball format. The tee-off begin with a shotgun start at 8am.
