Suspect dies after allegedly consuming poison at eMbalenhle Police Station

The man had reportedly been arrested and charged with attempted murder following an incident on July 30, in which he fed a child poison.

A man who was arrested in connection with the attempted poisoning of a child in eMbalenhle has died after allegedly consuming poison while in police custody.

The incident reportedly occurred on August 8 while a police officer was taking a statement from the suspect at the eMbalenhle Police Station.

According to information received, the man allegedly grabbed a substance believed to be poison that was on a desk and consumed it, then vomited.

An ambulance was summoned to the police station, and the suspect was rushed to hospital, where he was declared dead.

The man had reportedly been arrested and charged with attempted murder following an incident on July 30, in which he fed a child poison.

The child was initially rushed to Evander Hospital before being transferred to Rob Ferreira Hospital for further medical treatment.

An attempted murder case was subsequently opened and referred to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit for investigation.

Mpumalanga police provincial spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed the death of the suspect. Masondo said the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death while in police custody are being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
