Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison releases road statistics
According to the department, the number of Easter fatalities dropped by 77% as compared to the same period last year.
The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison said law enforcement officers stopped 18 629 vehicles between 2 and 13 April.
They were stopped in 14 roadblocks across the province. Altogether 10 drivers were issued with notices regarding motor defects and stopped with continuing their journeys.
A total of 14 motorists were arrested in connection with offences ranging from excessive speeding to failure to produce valid documentation.
According to the department, the number of Easter fatalities dropped by 77% as compared to the same period last year.
The department’s MEC, Ms Gabasile Shabalala said any loss of life or injury on the road is one too many.
“We must use the road with great care,” Ms Shabalala added.
As regards deaths, seven lives were lost and 10 people sustained serious injuries after six crashes.
The number of the seriously injured for last year was 138.
