The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) are providing food parcels as temporary relief for those who cannot meet their basic needs.
During the lockdown, people who are under undue hardship and loss of income in household as a result of the Covid-19 period, can individually contact at 0800 60 10 11 to request for food parcels assistance through the Social Relief of Distress (SRD).
Normally, SRD is offered to beneficiaries who are still waiting for a social grant payment, or who has been befallen by a disaster such as a house that burned down, or a storm or flooding or when the breadwinner has been jailed, fallen ill or died.
A referral is made to social workers to produce a report which will enable the beneficiary to receive the SRD for three months.
In Gert Sibande District, those numbers provided are an addition to the SASSA call centre. You can contact Sassa’s call centre at 0800 601011 or 017 285 04 or 017 285 0113 or 017 285 0112 or 017 285 0105 on Mondays to Fridays between 8am and 4pm.
