EVANDER – The Evander Regional Court last month sentenced Sbusiso Goodwill Nkala to 15 years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances.
The Regional Magistrate, Mr Victor Ball, meted out the sentence on the 31-year-old for a crime he committed against a senior citizen in Leandra on 14 October 2018.
Nkala attacked the 70-year-old Ms Joyce Snyman with a knife in front of the Spar in Leandra.
He also robbed her of R500, her and her husband’s Sassa cards, her bank cards, driver’s license and her shopping account cards.
Ms Snyman’s husband was waiting in the car for his wife when she was attacked. He saw the entire incident, but was unable to help her because he was still recovering from an amputated leg at the time.
A nearby car guard rushed to Ms Snyman’s aid and called the emergency services. He identified Nkala as the attacker and also testified at the trial.
Among the injuries inflicted on Ms Snyman was a wound to the head for which she received 12 stitches.
Ms Bimla Pillay was the prosecutor in the case.
