Church-man from eMbalenhle goes to jail for car theft

The crimes came to light when some of the new owners tried to renew the licenses and were informed that the vehicles have been stolen.

EVANDER – A well-known figure in eMbalenhle’s church circles was sentenced last month to 15 years’ imprisonment for vehicle theft.

Regional Magistrate, Ms Charmaine La Marque, found Fanie Lucky Cindi (42) guilty on six counts of vehicle theft and meted out a sentence of two and a half years on each count.

These will not be served concurrently and Cindi will therefore effectively spend 15 years in jail.

According to evidence in court, Cindi stole the six vehicles outside churches in Pretoria in 2014 and 2015. He then resold the cars to foreign nationals and even fellow church members in eMbalenhle.

The crimes came to light when some of the new owners tried to renew the licenses and were informed that the vehicles had been stolen.

The police seized two Volkswagen Polos, two Toyota Corolla sedans, a Toyota Yaris, and a Toyota RunX.

The six people who bought the vehicles from Cindi not only lost the vehicles, but also the money they had paid for the vehicles.

Ms Bimla Pillay prosecuted.
