Angel Khanyile raises Lekwa’s issues in parliament

She highlighted her areas of concern with regard to town namely the fire brigade, increasing number of farm murders and the hospital that has to cope with interruption in water and electricity supply.

Ms Angel Khanyile, DA-Member of Parliament, described the situation in Lekwa as heartbreaking.

She visited the offices of the Standerton Advertiser on Wednesday, 26 August.

“It keeps deteriorating before my eyes,” Ms Khanyile said.

Ms Khanyile was born in Standerton and did not mince her words when describing the leadership as arrogant.

“They do not communicate with the people,” she also said.

She highlighted her areas of concern namely the fire brigade, increasing number of farm murders and the hospital that has to cope with interruption in water and electricity supply.

As regards the fire brigade, two fire engines were paid for of which one broke down in Balfour.

The money is allegedly missing and R500 000 were allegedly paid up front for the two trucks, which did not reach their destination.

According to her, workers at the fire brigade said during an oversight visit they go to work to answer the phone and have no protective equipment.

The problem of murders at especially chicken broiler farms when farmers have to run their generators was also mentioned.

Ms Khanyile said the Standerton Hospital was without water for a week and added that a generator should only be used as a backup.

She indicated that the issues were raised in parliament and that the ruling party, on national level, knows about it.

“I am fighting to get our town back to what it used to be.”

The newspaper sent a WhatsApp-message to the communications manager of the Lekwa Municipality, Ms Thobeka Mtshiselwa, on Thursday, 27 August with regard to the money-aspect of the two trucks and is awaiting comment.
