Make a child’s heart happy and support shoebox project in Secunda
The shoeboxes this year will go to children living in Janelle Huis, Let the Children Come House in eMbalenhle, the House of Mercy project in Secunda and Adullam Missionary Station between eMbalenhle and Evander.
SECUNDA – The organisers of the annual Santa Shoebox project encouraged the community to make a child’s heart happy by supporting this project.
The project’s website is open for pledges.
It is the 14th year of this project in South Africa and the fifth year in Secunda.
People who are interested can visit the website, www.santashoebox.org.za and create a profile and choose to make up a shoebox for a boy or a girl. This box should contain a toothbrush, toothpaste, a face cloth, soap, a set of clothes, stationary items, a toy and a sweet or a packet of sweets. People are welcome to add extra items to the boxes they make up such as a water bottle, sanitary pads, sunglasses or deodorant.
Ms Gerda Peuckert, who initiated this project in Secunda five years ago, said people should decorate the boxes or wrap it with gift paper and drop it off at Laerskool Goedehoop on 7 and 8 November from 9am to 5pm.
Ms Peuckert and her team aim to again collect 400 boxes this year. They also collected and handed out 400 boxes to less privileged children last year.
The shoeboxes this year will go to children living in Janelle Huis, Let the Children Come House in eMbalenhle, the House of Mercy project in Secunda and Adullam Missionary Station between eMbalenhle and Evander.
Ms Peuckert urged residents to keep the safety and health of the children in mind by sanitising hands and wearing masks when packing and delivering the boxes. She said it is also important that residents pack the boxes three days before dropping it off to ensure everybody’s safety.
