eMBALENHLE – Fraudsters targeted locals who are desperately looking for jobs.
These fraudsters prey on desperate job seekers by advertising jobs on social media platforms, especially on Facebook requesting CVs to be sent.
They sometimes use brands of well-known job websites making the applicant to think that the job offer is from a legitimate source.
Once the job seeker is hooked, the scammers then call or send an email to the applicant posing as the company’s HR manager or recruiter, suggesting that the candidate has either been short-listed or successful in their application.
They will then advise them to deposit money for medical fitness tests.
They often pretend to be hiring people for Sasol in the area.
Const Busi Mthethwa, police spokesman, said more than 10 cases of fraud linked to job scams were reported at eMbalenhle Police Station in August.
“In the cases that we are investing, the victims were told to deposit R1 500 each into a specific bank account.
“They were then told to go to one of the Sasol mines for the signing of contracts. When they arrived, Sasol was not aware of this.”
She advised job seekers to not give money to people who promised them a job.
