Lekwa announces their plans to address sewage spillages

Although the greater Standerton area has proper sewer lines, two areas namely Rooikoppen and Ext 8 are without.

Lekwa Municipality contributed sewage pollution of the Vaal River to an aged, vandalised infrastructure and an increased demand.

The Standerton Advertiser gave coverage to the problem in its previous edition, publishing the views of the provincial leader of the Freedom Front Plus, Mr Werner Weber.

Lekwa’s communications manager, Ms Thobeka Mtshiselwa, sent a press statement on Wednesday, 7 October in which the following were said:

Although the greater Standerton area has proper sewer lines, two areas namely Rooikoppen and Ext 8 are without.

Plans are however, in place to address sewerage-related issues.

As regards Ext 8, the Department of Human Settlements has availed R13-million to install two sewer pump stations.

Additional funding to the amount of R19-million is required to address the bulk sewer pipelines, as well as challenges with house connections that result in sewage spillages.

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has committed, through the RBIG, to help with the shortfall.

A honey sucker truck will be deployed to empty manholes.

The Vaal Sewer Pump Station’s panel and non-return valve will be repaired and the suction pipe will be unblocked.

Security will be deployed.

The Rooikoppen Pump Station 2’s refurbishment and upgrading will be completed once the contractual dispute has been resolved.

At TLC, the electric panel will be repaired and faulty motors and pumps will be replaced.

Additional staff will be recruited.

The Johan Street Pump Station and Muller Street Pump Station will be refurbished and rehabilitated.

All of the above are envisaged for the 2020/2021 financial year.

The DWS has allocated funding through WSIG for the installation of a new sewer reticulation system in Rooikoppen. They have appointed Gert Sibande District Municipality as the implementing agent.

The estimated costs of the project are R248-million and it is anticipated that the project will be implemented over the next three financial years, beginning from the 2020/2021 financial year.

The proposed budget for the upgrade in Rooikoppen for the 2020/2021 financial year is R50 650 000, R60 000 000 for the 2021/2022 financial year and R62 880 000 for the 2022/2023 financial year.
