SECUNDA – Ms Adelaide du Plessis, better known as Molly, celebrated her 101st birthday on Tuesday, 13 October at the house of her son and daughter-in-law in Secunda.
She has been staying with her son, Mr Johannes (Dupe) and daughter-in-law, Ms Marie du Plessis in Secunda for the past four years.
She lived in Bela Bela before moving to Secunda.
Ms Marie du Plessis said it was a quiet day with only a few family members.
She baked a chocolate cake for her mother-in-law to celebrate and gave her her favourite sweet things such as caramel cones and chocolate éclairs.
Ms Du Plessis was born in Boksburg in 1919 and began with a hairdressing apprenticeship after she finished school, but she did not complete it.
As a child she has lived in Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Zambia before settling in South Africa.
She met her husband, Mr Jan du Plessis (Snr) in Zimbabwe. They were married in 1941 and had four children of which two are already deceased.
She was married to Mr Du Plessis for 42 years. He died 37 years ago.
Ms Du Plessis has five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren of which two are deceased.
