Cable theft affects eMba’s sewage plant

Residents are questioning the whereabouts of the security guards who were specifically hired to safeguard the sewage plant.

eMBALENHLE- Govan Mbeki Municipality opened a case of cable theft at eMbalenhle Police Station on Monday, June 21.

This came after electricity supply cables at the wastewater treatment works in eMbalenhle were stolen.

The Govan Mbeki Municipality is concern about the number of vandalism incidents to municipal infrastructure that are taking place in eMbalenhle.

“Recent infrastructure vandalism has a dire impact because all pump stations stopped working.

This also increases the number of sewage complaints due to the non-flowing of sewage at the outfall lines,” said Mr Lucky Mhlongo, acting head of communication.

The stolen cables stopped operations at the screw pumps that take sewage from the community to the pump stations and then to water treatment works.

Residents are questioning the whereabouts of the security guards who were specifically hired to safeguard the sewage plant.

Mr Mhlongo said the investigation is ongoing to find out what has happened.

eMbalenhle police confirmed the municipality has opened a case of cable theft and police appeal to the community to come forward with information.

Mr Mhlongo said the vandalism of the municipal infrastructure is creating a strain and it deprives the public to receive quality and consistent service delivery.

“Money that is spent in replacing these cables, would have been used elsewhere to improve service delivery.

“We also appeal to the members of the community to report such crimes.

“The municipality further urges residents to assist by reporting and guarding against the vandalism of its infrastructure,” conclude Mr Mhlongo.
