Evander court holds 16 days of activism campaign

Ms Msibi encouraged victims of gender-based violence to use the services of Thuthuzela Care Centres if the police stations are failing to assist them.

Evander court intermediary, Ms Thembi Msibi, said their court is opened for everyone because people even bring problems that doesn’t need court attention.

She said community also bring the service delivery issues that require municipality attention.

Ms Msibi said this during their 16 days of activism against women and child abuse held at eMbalenhle Gotso Hall on Friday, December 10.

“The court doesn’t want anyone to be turned back without being assisted, regardless on whether that matter requires our attention or not.

“We always preach that all government institutions need to work together in bringing services to the people because some community members are comfortable to speak out when are in court or at police station.

“Sometimes we also do police work because some police officers do not want to help the community, and the community then turn to the court for help.”

Ms Msibi encouraged victims of gender-based violence to use the services of Thuthuzela Care Centres if the police stations are failing to assist them.

She also said their purpose to bring the campaign at eMbalenhle is to make people understand the court deals with domestic violence cases.

“We brought application forms for protection orders and then teach our community members how it works because sometimes we find that some people contravene the order.

“In most cases, the complainants don’t differentiate between temporary and final protection orders. It works the same – a person can be arrested and prosecuted for contravening even a temporary order.

“Once you have one of these orders, you are protected until your court date and people should report any contravention to their nearest police station,” said Ms Msibi.
