Mr Sibusiso Silaule (30) a young BSc graduate in Biochemistry from Witwatersrand University, who is also a Grade 12 life science teacher at Highveld Park High School, is the author of four books known as Life Science in Black and White.
He said the books make it easier for Grade 12 learners to understand life science because it is difficult for learners from poor backgrounds to afford copies of the study guide and workbooks.
“I authored these books so that every learner can have access to these resourceful books which will help them to achieve the results that they want in Grade 12.
“My intention was not to write books but to compile study materials that can make my work easier as a teacher.
“I began by compiling notes for each chapter for the learners in my class where I teach and my subject advisor was impressed by my work.
“He advised me to share my work with other schools in Mpumalanga and that is how I ended up here at Highveld Park High School. They saw my work on social media,” said Mr Silaule.
Mr Silaule said his books change the way of teaching and learning because they include a workbook, exam paper activities like scientific investigations and skills-based activities that make it easy for learners to write notes during lessons as it also provides practice and labelling of science diagrams.
He began teaching Grade 12 learners at Khutsalani Secondary School where 69 of his Grade 12 learners obtained distinctions and 106 got level 6 pass results in 2019.
This made him a top teacher who boasts the highest number of learners that obtained distinctions in his school.
Mr Silaule supplied Grade 12 learners with free notes based on his teaching experience during hard lockdown.
He said his books also assist learners with biological terms and practice questions from previous exam papers which also reduces overload work for teachers because there is no need for copies every day.
