Parents in Govan Mbeki municipal area demand space for their children in schools

“Where do they want us to take our children? If these offices are not there to assist us, let them close.

Parents of learners who were not placed in different schools around the Govan Mbeki District demanded answers from the Department of Education’s Secunda circuit on Thursday, January 13.

These parents are accusing the department of not fulfilling its promises.

Some alleged that they have registered their children before schools closed for the December holidays last year but have not received response.

“We were told to register our children early if they are going to other grades that are not catered for in their schools, but now this is what we get and experience every year.

“The department must keep their house in order.

“We are now told schools are full. Why didn’t they tell us in time? We want our children admitted to classes next week,” said a very upset parent.

“Where do they want us to take our children? If these offices are not there to assist us, let them close.

“They are telling us to leave and that they will call us, but they failed to do that before the schools opened,” said another parent.

Some said they have been in contact with different schools for space but were told the schools are full.

The angry parents are blaming the system of early registration, saying it causes more frustration than the way in which they did things in the past.

“We were used to register our children when schools opened in January, and even our employers knew we were going to register our children at school.

“Now we take time to register the children early in September only to have to come here in January to fight.

“These people forget that we are working and there is no company that can allow us to take two days off to register children at school.

“ I had to take unpaid leave,” said Mr Wenzokuhle Mnguni.

Ridge Times sent questions to the Mpumalanga Department of Education spokesperson, Mr Jasper Zwane. He did not respond in times of going to press.
