Farmer in Standerton area is worried because many fish are dying

In a prompt reply, the general manager said Eskom will look into the allegations.

Farmers near Leeuspruit in the Standerton-district are concerned about the number of fish dying.

Ms Sonja Lombard of the farm, Welbedacht, contacted the Standerton Advertiser the past week, saying Leeuspruit runs through their farm on its way to Grootdraai Dam.

“We are very worried as our cattle drink water from this stream,” Ms Lombard said.

She went on to say that rumours are circulating that Tutuka Power Station is allegedly dumping their chemical waste directly into the stream.

Ms Lombard however, appealed to the newspaper to investigate the allegation.

The Standerton Advertiser contacted the office of the general manager of Tutuka on Wednesday, January 19 and asked to speak to Mr Sello Mametja.

Mr Mametja was not available the whole day to take calls and an email was subsequently sent the same day at 10:00.

In a prompt reply, the general manager said Eskom will look into the allegations and revert back to the newspaper in due course.

“This will include an investigation where we will sample all the spruits and analyse it in order to check the merits of the allegations and determine the source,” Mr Mametja also said.
