Water level at Grootdraai Dam steadily climbing
Grootdraai Dam increased from 101,8% to 102,3%.
Water levels in Mpumalanga Province continue to rise with the majority of the listed dams recording increases.
According to the Department of Water and Sanitation’s (DWS) weekly state of reservoirs report of 17 January, the only dams that recorded some declines in water volumes are Morgenstond
Dam in the Gert Sibande District that dropped from 100,3% to 99,2% and Loskop Dam from 103,2% to 102,4%.
The average water levels increased from 91,2% to 92,4% and in terms of the Water Management Areas (WMA), the Olifants WMA increased from 80,7% to 81,2% and the Inkomati-Usuthu WMA increased from 96,7% to 98,1%.
Grootdraai Dam increased from 101,8% to 102,3%, Nooitgedacht from 95,1% to 97,3%, Vygeboom from 101,1% to 102,3%, Jericho from 96,7% to 98,7%, Westoe from 87,6% to 93,9%, and Heyshope from 100,7% to 101,0%.
The department encouraged the public to be extra careful along watercourses and avoid trying to cross overflowing and flooded rivers and dams.
“Always respect and never underestimate the power of water,” the statement read.
They also encouraged the public to continue using water wisely and sparingly as South Africa is a dry and water scarce country.
“Let us also make water conservation a norm and make every drop count as water has no substitute,” the statement concluded..
