Half a dozen learners from Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School fell ill after allegedly eating “space muffins” (muffins laced with dagga) on Monday, January 30.
According to the information, these space muffins were bought from a learner at the school.
The school management is trying to determine where this learner obtained these cakes.
Other learners told Ridge Times this is not the first time that such an incident happened. They said last year a similar incident took place.
They said some learners were rushed to the nearest clinic because they ate space muffins and became dizzy in class.
One learner told the newspaper that he ate a piece of the space cake given to him by a classmate and soon felt dizzy and then vomited.
“We are lucky because we are only six who ate those muffins. What would have happened if the whole school ate of it?” said the learner.
The school referred the newspaper to the Mpumalanga Department of Basic Education.
Jasper Zwane, spokesman for the Department of Education in Mpumalanga, said the school governing body was directed to trace those who are behind this and take the required action in keeping to the dictates of the School African Schools Act and the Code of Conduct for learners.
“We are waiting for an update from the school,” said Mr Zwane.
