Hoërskool Secunda excels at Sasol awards function
The top achievers received money and awards for their performance in mathematics, technical mathematics, physical science, technical science, life sciences, languages, geography, accounting, computer applications technology (CAT), business studies, economics, agriculture studies, technology and engineering and graphic design (EGD).
Sasol awarded and celebrated the matrics of 2021 who obtained three or more distinctions on Friday, January 28 at the Sasol Grade 12 Awards function held at Ukhozi Lodge.
The top achievers received money and awards for their performance in mathematics, technical mathematics, physical science, technical science, life sciences, languages, geography, accounting, computer applications technology (CAT), business studies, economics, agriculture studies, technology and engineering and graphic design (EGD).
Simon Baloyi, Sasol’s senior vice president for Regional Operations and Asset Services, said investing in education remains one of Sasol’s key strategic imperatives.
“We believe in recognising and rewarding excellence,” said Baloyi.
“Through these awards we are ensuring that those learners who have performed exceptionally well in their subjects, are rewarded with financial support from Sasol for any future studies.
“Sasol fully appreciates the impeccable role of educators and parents who were instrumental for the success of the Grade 12 class of 2021.”
The executive mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality, Nhlakanipho Zuma, also attended the awards ceremony and encouraged the learners.
The best educator in mathematics and physical science was also announced and awarded at the ceremony as well as the overall best performing school and the best performing educators in quintile 1-3 schools for science, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects.
Sasol also awarded 2021’s most improved school and the learners who obtained level 6 plus in math and physical science.
Hoërskool Secunda walked away with many of the awards and received the award for the overall best performing school.
The two top academic achievers in the area, Grace Thanjan with nine distinctions and Anugraha Prakash with eight distinctions are from Hoërskool Secunda and this school also have the best teachers.
Four teachers of Hoërskool Secunda received awards for being the best teachers in math and physics.
They are Karen Heese (maths), Stephnie Kroucamp (maths), Magda Viljoen (physics) and Liesl Pretorius (physics).
The Mjokwane Secondary School in Komatipoort received the award for the most improved school in 2021 and the best performing teachers in the quintile 1-3 schools for science, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects are MT Masilela from the Mehlobovu Secondary School and Sibiya from the Steenbok Secondary School.
Baloyi further said that all the work that is done in the education space, is guided by the Sasol Foundation whose mandate is to create impactful change through access to quality education that enables sustainable economic participation in a changing society focused on the learner and executing through the school and the national government systems and Osizweni, a Sasol initiative that provides educators and learners in historically disadvantaged communities with structures, managed support in science, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.
