Department of public works comes up with a plan for run-down houses in Standerton
He indicated the following day that he took photos and that maintenance will be done by putting a plan in place.
The Department of Public Works apologised to neighbours of run-down houses in streets in town.
Lucky Nkosi of the department contacted the Standerton Advertiser on Tuesday, March 22 after reading the front page article about conditions in Vry Street, Standerton.
The newspaper was unsuccessful at the time of going to press to get comment from the department.
Mention was made in the article about other houses in town where no maintenance has been done.
Nkosi also visited the newspaper’s office the same day and was given directions to the properties.
He said the department was unaware of the situation.
He indicated the following day that he took photos and that maintenance will be done by putting a plan in place.
Employees of the department will be accommodated in the houses and they will be responsible for looking after the properties.
“The sites are hazardous,” he added.
He also thanked the newspaper for drawing attention to the state of sites.
Concerned residents contacted the newspaper about inter alia overgrown gardens and in some cases, the possibility that criminals could cash in on the empty stands.
