Residents living near the green strip between Steelpoort Street, Sabie Street and Wilge Street are concerned about sink and wooden structures going up near a building site in this green strip.
Developers bought the ground at the green strip and a few houses have already been built there, but residents said the construction has now been dragging on for about two years.
“The developers say it is the site office, but people are living there,” said one of the residents.
“They are also having parties and are playing loud music and drinking until 02:00 in the morning.”
Mariaan Chamberlain, DA councillor, said she is aware of the situation and she already notified the Department of Planning and Housing who said they informed the developers that they must remove the structures.
However, nothing has been done.
Empty beer bottles could be seen at the illegal structures, as well as illegal water connections and a new rubbish dump.
Heaps of ground in this green strip that were supposed to have been removed, is still there.
Chamberlain investigated and asked the municipality about the situation again.
The spokesman of the department involved said the residents must first go to the police station and open cases and get case numbers before the relevant department can act on the problem.
“I do not feel safe to go on holiday and leave my house, because now there is a whole new squatter camp in my neighbourhood,” said a resident.
Donald Green, spokesman of Govan Mbeki Municipality said their law enforcement department is currently investigating the matter.
