Evander Gold Mine helps matriculants

The company has launched a school drive campaign aimed at donating school supplies in some of the local needy schools and learners.

Evander Gold Mines recently awarded the best performing matriculants 2021 at an event held at eMbalenhle Sasol Club.

Sibongiseni Malaza from Thistle Grove Combined School, who obtained four distinctions in accounting, mathematics, life science and physical science, was awarded a full-bursary of tuition, accommodation, and textbooks. The bursary also includes a monthly allowance and laptop.

Malaza will be studying electrical engineering at Wits University.

Other learners received laptops. Two eMbalenhle primary schools also received school uniforms for those learners from needy families.

Livhuwani Ramuedzisi, human resource manager at the mine, said they believe in increasing access to education that can reduce poverty and unemployment.

“As the mine, we have launched a school drive campaign aimed at donating school supplies in some of the local needy schools and learners.

“We have noticed that due to unemployment and exorbitant prices of school uniforms and stationery, families struggle to buy it for their children. We are intervening because we are promoting the spirit of Ubuntu which we believe will encourage learners to take their schoolwork seriously and boost their self-esteem,” said Ramuedzisi.

She also said they donated mobile libraries and other necessities to schools around the Govan Mbeki Municipality.
