Burglaries and robberies at homes are rife in Bronkhorstspruit

The Bronkhorstspruit Police urged residents to be alert and vigilant when leaving their homes.

According to the Bronkhorstspruit Police, a number of burglaries (housebreakings) and robberies have been reported in their policing precinct.

“These burglaries happen mostly during the day in areas such as Erasmus, Cultura Park, Bronkhorstbaai and Zithobeni,” said Const Cathrine Ramovha, communication officer for the Bronkhorstspruit Police.

According to Ramovha, criminals specifically target houses where no one is at home and zoom in on valuable items such as plasma television sets, laptops, cell phones and other valuables.

Romovah further told Streeknuus that there is apparently a white Mercedes Benz roaming the streets during the day.

“It is suspected that the occupants could be the ones committing these crimes.”

“The police, therefore, plead with residents to be alert and on the lookout.

“If they do come across such a suspicious-looking vehicle, take down the registration number and immediately report it to the police.”

The Bronkhorstspruit Police also urged residents to be alert and vigilant when leaving their homes.

“Please also profile your domestic workers and gardeners.”

The Bronkhorstspruit Police provided some tips to homeowners to help reduce their chances of becoming a victim of these criminals:

· Get to know your neighbours.
· Post or pamphlets that have been left at the gate for a long period is a sure sign that nobody is at home. Ask someone to keep an eye on your property and remove post and newspapers at the gate.
· Curtains should be closed in the evening to prevent people from observing the activities inside your home.
· Never leave contractors or workers unattended at your home.
· Do not leave your garage, front or back door open; it serves as an invitation to burglars.
· Conduct a thorough background check before employing anyone. (permanent or casual workers). Request their identity documents and make a copy for safekeeping. Check their references and do a security clearance at the police.
· Never leave keys in a lock.
· Do not leave any laundry or tools outside.
· Residents must also play their part in helping the police in the fight against crime by forming a neighbourhood watch group and the police about any suspicious activities.
