Water levels at Grootdraai Dam decline to 89.1%
In terms of districts, Gert Sibande dropped from 94.2% to 92.8%, Ehlanzeni dropped from 99.5% to 99.1% and Nkangala recorded an improvement from 98.5% to 99.0%.
Water levels at Grootdraai Dam in the Integrated Vaal River System in Standerton in the Gert Sibande District in Mpumalanga continue to drop and have dipped below 90%.
According to the Department of Water and Sanitation’s state of reservoirs report, dated August 28, Grootdraai Dam recorded a further drop from last week’s 92.1% to 89.1%.
This slide below the 90% mark comes after holding steady for a long period.
The other listed dams in the district also continue to drop in water volumes, with only Vygeboom Dam holding it steady above 100% by recording unchanged water levels at 100.3%.
Nooitgedacht dropped from 92.0% to 90.7%, Jericho from 82.2% to 81.3%, Westoe from 66.3% to 62.1%, Morgenstond from 99.0% to 98.6% and Heyshope from 99.3% to 99.1%.
The decline in levels in the district is in line with the provincial situation, where the report shows that the whole of Mpumalanga recorded an average dam level drop from 96.7% to 96.2%.
The report also showed that in terms of the Water Management Areas, the Olifants remained unchanged at 88.7%, while the Inkomati-Usuthu dropped from 97.0% to 96.5%.

The department encouraged the public to be responsible and more conservative in their water use and continue using the available water wisely and sparingly.
