Pigs ’n Paws from Cullinan rescues neglected pigs
The organisation that helped with the boars took in the pregnant sows to help find homes for the piglets.
Pigs ’n Paws is an NPO situated 13km outside of Cullinan, which was founded in May 2020. They rescue pigs that have been abused, exploited or discarded.
They recently rescued a group of 10 pigs from a resident in the Cullinan area and took them to the pig sanctuary.
The owner contacted Pigs ’n Paws and asked for help because they couldn’t take care of the pigs anymore.
One of the five rescued boars died from a post-operation heart attack while the remaining four were sterilised.
These pigs will be taken care of for three weeks after the surgery and only then can they return to the pig sanctuary.
Antoinette Steyn, director of Pigs ’n Paws, found out that three of the sows were pregnant and told the owner that she could not take the pregnant pigs because a single pig can give birth to about 15 piglets.

According to Steyn, Pig ’n Paws is currently the largest pig sanctuary in South Africa, being home to about 300 pigs of all shapes and sizes, three cows, three sheep, and several dogs and cats.
She drives to the market five times a week to buy fresh vegetables such as butternut, pumpkin, carrots, spinach, squash, sweet potatoes and sometimes beetroot.
The pigs get vegetables five times a week and Hominy chop, a mixture of maize bran, maize leaves, maize stalks, maize cobs, and lucerne, twice a week.
