Motorist dies in Dr Nelson Mandela Drive in Standerton
Emergency personnel on the scene said Carel Pelser possibly died on impact. He was ejected from his Nissan bakkie as it swerved.
The morning of June 6 had a grim beginning for motorists on Dr Nelson Mandela Drive, where a head-on collision claimed the life of Carel Pelser.
The collision between a Nissan NP200 bakkie and a Haval station wagon crash was around 09:46.
According to SAPS reports, the driver of the Haval was allegedly trying to overtake another vehicle on the road and crashed into the oncoming NP200.
Broken vehicle debris littered the scene, making it difficult to discern which parts belonged to what vehicle.
The Haval’s engine seemed to melt into a pile of rubble. The Nissan NP200, however, received the bulk of the damage, with virtually no salvageable parts.
Diesel pooled underneath the vehicles, showing the extent of the damage. Emergency personnel on the scene said Pelser possibly died on impact. He was ejected from his Nissan bakkie as it swerved.
Pelser was alone in the bakkie at the time of the accident. The driver of the Haval was accompanied by a passenger.
Emergency personnel transported the survivors of this accident to Standerton Hospital. The driver of the Haval is facing charges of culpable homicide.
A witness on the scene stated they pulled the driver from the Haval after noticing the diesel leak, for fear of the vehicle catching fire.
According to employees of All Star Towing, this was the fifth accident scene they had attended that day, but the most gruesome.
