CAER members train at Highveld Mediclinic
CAER members were trained to continue rendering services to the community regarding fire and life safety.
Seventeen CAER members received training at the Highveld Mediclinic in Trichardt from May 13 to 17.
The training fell under the international NFPA 1035 standard for fire and life safety educators.
CAER members who participated included the Govan Mbeki Municipality’s (GMM) fire and rescue services, the municipal disaster management, the traffic department, Sasol Emergency Management, Sasol security and traffic services and Hamnet.
One of the critical functions of the CAER committee is to plan and execute awareness activities within GMM regarding fire and life safety.
Executing this service effectively to the community requires individuals trained to render this service. The shortage of trained educators was highlighted during a 2023 CAER meeting.

The committee then investigated various options at its disposal to facilitate and address this need.
The Johannesburg Emergency Management Service’s Public Information Education and Relations division was approached, and Gavin Wilson, with the support of his management, agreed to assist with training.
The training was made possible by CAER members and non-members.
“We thank Highveld Mediclinic for the venue, BCX for the printing of the participant manuals, Selective Cookies for the morning snacks and Gavin Wilson for his time and effort in presenting the training,” said Neels de Klerk, the Sasol representative on the CAER committee.
CAER committee chairperson Boel Engelbrecht said, “Doing awareness on a host of fire and life safety topics is our core business. To do this effectively, we must ensure the safety messages we teach are appropriate for a specific audience.”
