Entities in Standerton take preventative fire season measures

André Kasselman of the LCUC and Kasselman Security organised the project.

The Lekwa Clean Up Crew (LCUC) took on its biggest project yet on June 11 with the help of various service providers, such as the Standerton Fire Department, Transnet, Lekwa Traffic, Highveld Crushers and Astral.

The crew set out on Tuesday morning aiming to set fires as a preventative measure against possible damage that might arise due to the excessively long, dry grass next to the railroads in Meyerville.

André Kasselman of the LCUC and Kasselman Security organised the project.

“If we do not take these measures now, devastating damage could arise later,” said Kasselman.

Highveld Crushers donated their time and two large water tanks to the efforts. The Standerton Fire Department regulated the fires and ensured safety measures were followed.

The Lekwa Traffic Department was present to warn motorists of the thick smoke over the roads.

Transnet representatives stood by and ensured passing trains’ safety during the fires. Astral contributed its time and water tanks to burn the other side of the railroad.

The team accomplished their goal of clearing up the hazardous dry grass from the Volksrust Railway bridge up to the Meyerville bridge.

“We could not have done it without the help we received from all the parties involved,” added Kasselman.

The LCUC thanked Highveld Crushers and the Lekwa Fire Department for making this project possible.

They hope to team up again with service providers to keep improving the Lekwa community.
