Cullinan SAPS warn against vigilantism

“Vigilantism can lead to division in communities, creating conflicts between those who support vigilante actions and those who believe in upholding the legal system.”

The Cullinan SAPS arrested a woman (56) and a man (50) in connection with the murder of a middle-aged man from Mampuru Park, Pretoria, on the evening of October 9.

According to the Cullinan SAPS, detectives did a preliminary investigation after an eyewitness saw how the two suspects accused the deceased of stealing from the community. The suspects then allegedly mobilised a mob to attack the victim.

Sergeant Thomas Masufi, the sub-section Crime Prevention Commander, held an awareness campaign in the community.

He urged the public not to take the law into their own hands and refrain from criminal activities like vigilantism and mob justice.

Ward 100 Clr Johannes Bekker added to Masufi’s statement. He said engaging in such action could exacerbate crime levels and lead to tragic consequences for innocent individuals because of misjudgements.

“Vigilantism can lead to division in communities, creating conflicts between those who support vigilante actions and those who believe in upholding the legal system,” said Bekker.

“When vigilantes take justice into their own hands, it can undermine trust in law enforcement and the judicial system, further complicating efforts to maintain order and justice in society,” Bekker concluded.

The duo will appear at the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court facing the charges of murder.
