NPO teaches animal freedoms to Kinross Primary learners

Little Paws Big Heart members and furry friend Blacky visited Kinross Primary School learners to raise awareness around the five animal freedoms.

“Educating is key and starts with little ones,” says Sonja Kempen of Little Paws Big Heart (LPBH).

LPBH visited Kinross Primary learners on October 17 to teach them about animals’ five freedoms.

“We walk a path with the younger children in educating them on better care of their animals, whereas an adult is set in their ways, and it is hard to change their mindset,” said Kempen.

She said children usually contact LPBH when there is a problem with their animals and during LPBH’s outreach programmes in rural areas.

Sonja Kempen tells the learners that animals have a right to freedom from discomfort.

The five freedoms:

• Freedom from hunger and thirst.

• Freedom from discomfort.

• Freedom from pain, injury or disease.

• Freedom to express normal behaviour, and

• Freedom from fear and distress.

According to Kempen, Ghana has six animal freedoms, one being that animals are not property.

“Did you know if you steal someone’s dog in Ghana, it is like an offence of stealing a TV?” said Sonja.

LPBH are busy with a kennel project. One activity for the learners was to paint the kennel with their handprints.

LPBH, an NPO, attends to over 900 animals monthly. Most of these animals live in locations and informal settlements. There is always a need for food, kennel, bed and blanket donations.
