Employees injured at power station near Kriel
A transformer explosion at Matla Power Station near Kriel left nine employees injured, one critically, prompting the shutdown of Unit 5 as emergency protocols were activated to ensure safety.
A transformer exploded at Matla Power Station near Kriel yesterday afternoon and left nine employees injured, one critically.
The explosion happened at Unit 6 of the power station and as a precaution, Unit 5 was also taken offline to ensure the safety of all employees and contractors on site.
Eskom’s Executive for Generation, Bheki Nxumalo, said: “Our first thoughts are with those who have been injured and we are ensuring they get the medical attention they need.
“All emergency protocols have been activated.”
Eskoms’s technical teams were on site to assess the situation and will continue to do so today.
