Zonderwater in Cullinan conducted a successful search operation

This collaborative effort forms part of the intensified Operation Vala, aimed at curbing and strictly controlling the entry of contraband into correctional facilities.

The Zonderwater Correctional Facility in Cullinan conducted a targeted search operation at Medium-A Correctional Centre in December 2024 as part of a decisive move to strengthen security during the festive season.

Led by the Department of Correctional Services Emergency Support Team (EST), the Ekurhuleni and Bronkhorstspruit SAPS K9 units, the First Response Team and Genesis K9 Security Group supported the operation.

Mashudu Mutamba, communication officer at Zonderwater Correctional Services, said this collaborative effort forms part of the intensified Operation Vala, aimed to curb and control the entry of contraband into correctional facilities.

Josias Mokobane, Zonderwater’s acting area commissioner, emphasised the critical importance of safeguarding the lives of correctional officials and offenders through implementing Operation Vala.

“While regular searches are routine in the facility, this special operation intensified efforts, with K9 law enforcement teams conducting thorough inspections within the cells, leaving no bed or corner unchecked.

“As part of the comprehensive security sweep, the team inspected the officials’ vehicles, including those of senior management in the parking area,” Mutamba added.

Mokobane believes the measure reinforces the importance of eliminating all avenues for illegal item entry.

“We are steadfast in implementing robust security measures to prevent contraband from entering our correctional facilities,” said Mokobane.

According to Thalitha Tshehla, area coordinator for corrections at Zonderwater Management Area, the December-to-January operation signifies a zero-tolerance approach to security breaches.

“Today, we concentrated on the maximum-security facility, but this is just the beginning. We plan more operations to ensure vigilance across all centres,” Tshehla explained.

“Intelligence about potential illicit activities prompted the initiative, demonstrating the effectiveness of strategic planning and swift action.

“Possession of contraband, illegal, or unauthorised items is a serious offence within the correctional centres as it poses a life threat and can lead to charges against the involved offender or official,” Mutamba also said.

Officials lauded the operation’s success, highlighting its role in ensuring the safety of staff and offenders. Mokobane called on the community and officials to report any attempts to smuggle contraband and urged officials to remain vigilant even when off-duty.

“We are in a different era. Please stay alert and take care of yourselves and your family,” Mokobane said.
