Turbines at port will soon come to Bethal

The project is part of the country’s renewable energy programme and implemented by Seriti Green to lower the carbon emission footprint and ensure long-term sustainability as a diversified energy producer.

A consignment of components destined for an R25b commercial wind farm under construction in Bethal is presently being delivered via vessels entering the port of Richards Bay.

The enormous blades and towers for the wind turbines are stored alongside the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ) site at the harbour’s east gate. It will be transferred by road in due course.

A total of 125 turbines will be installed over the next 36 months at the Ummbila Emoyeni farm in Bethel, from where South African company Seriti Green plans to contribute 900 megawatts of clean energy to the national grid by the end of 2027.

Dave Savides of the Zululand Observer reported on this last week, stating again, the importance of Richards Bay’s deepwater port to the national economy.

The Mpumalanga premier, Mandla Ndlovu, visited the wind energy generating facility Ummbila Emoyeni on a farm between Bethal and Morgenzon in the Govan Mbeki municipal area late last year.

The project is part of the country’s renewable energy programme and implemented by Seriti Green to lower the carbon emission footprint and ensure long-term sustainability as a diversified energy producer.

The Ummbila Emoyeni farm will supply Seriti’s mining operations and Eskom with power, generated from wind through the turbines. The full commercial operation is anticipated to commence this year.

The farm is an excellent area for wind development because of the high wind speed experienced here. This is a first in Mpumalanga and the largest hybrid energy facility in South Africa. It will redefine the province’s journey towards a just energy transition.

According to Ndlovu, the project created many jobs and business opportunities for the local communities in the Gert Sibande District Municipality and local municipalities such as Govan Mbeki, Lekwa and Pixley Ka Seme.
