AfriForum loses court case but GMM’s residents have water

Organisation fights for rights of people.

Although AfriForum lost the court case against Rand Water in December, the chairperson of AfriForum’s Secunda branch, Jan du Plessis, believes this court case produced good fruit.

AfriForum opened a court case against Rand Water last year alleging Rand Water is throttling the water supply to residents of the Govan Mbeki municipal area.

The court could not find sufficient evidence and ruled in Rand Water’s favour.

However, Du Plessis said shortly after the court case on December 17, Bethal residents suddenly had water again.

The pressure control valve system at the reservoir near Kinross needs some work.

“We believe it is because of the pressure we applied to Rand Water through the ongoing court case,” said Du Plessis.

He said another problem with the water is the pressure valve at the reservoir in Secunda is not working.

“We have reported it to the municipality, but they have not fixed it yet,” said Du Plessis.

He said the reservoir was vandalised years ago and not properly repaired. The municipality also did no maintenance.
