Lekwa’s executive mayor addresses unemployment

They tackled the three-fold problem of unemployment, poverty and socio-economic inequalities.

Several stakeholders gathered at the Lekwa municipal offices on March 11, where the executive mayor, Sifiso Mngemezulu, stood ready to meet with them.

Lubabalo Majenge, communications officer for the Lekwa Local Municipality, said this event aimed to foster collaborations and strengthen relationships between the municipality and its stakeholders.

They tackled the three-fold problem of unemployment, poverty and socio-economic inequalities. The stakeholders in attendance were representatives of SASOL, Seriti, Eskom, Meadow Feeds, Standerton Mills, COFCO International and Sky Villiage.

Mngemezulu delivered the keynote address, saying: “Maintaining relationships and bringing change to the municipality is essential for our community to grow and prosper.”

He encouraged stakeholders to continue supporting Lekwa on its mission to build better communities through corporate social investment (CSI) and the Social Labour Plan.

He urged stakeholders to include the communities wherein they are based on their CSI to make an impact in addressing local needs.

The municipality believes centralised CSI initiatives would tackle poverty from all angles and ensure the efficient sharing of resources.

Mngemezulu also urged that a local employee database be kept, to make sure locals are prioritised for jobs. According to Majenge, these meetings will be more frequent to ensure local needs within the municipality are met.
