Municipal bills rise while GMM breaks rates law

The VF Plus has slammed the Govan Mbeki Municipality for flouting the Property Rates Act and warns that residents could see steep bill increases next month.

Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) Clr Aranda Nel-Buitendag has criticised the Govan Mbeki Municipality for failing to comply with the Municipal Property Rates Act, calling the situation unacceptable.

The VF Plus recently tabled a motion highlighting the municipality’s inconsistent application of tariff increases and misleading communication regarding property valuations and rates. The motion was dismissed.

“This shows the council’s disregard for legal compliance and public accountability,” said Nel-Buitendag.

She noted the municipality had previously been warned against misinforming residents about the impact of property valuations on rates.

“In addition, it still fails to comply with sections 14(1) and (2) of the Municipal Property Rates Act. Despite claims of a 5.44% rate reduction, consumers may face an effective increase of 17% due to higher property valuations,” she explained.

She added that the rate for undeveloped land had increased by 3%. As a result, Secunda, Bethal, Charl Cilliers, eMbalenhle, Evander, Kinross, Leandra and Trichardt residents might see sharp increases in their municipal bills from July 1.

According to the VF Plus, another serious concern is that Secunda is treated as the municipality’s “cash cow” when some residents in other towns owe more than R100 000 and ignore payment arrangements.

“The VF Plus remains committed to holding the municipality accountable and will continue to oppose budget and policy decisions that unfairly burden loyal taxpayers,” said Nel-Buitendag.
