Govan Mbeki Municipality hosts two-day youth summit

Held under the theme “Youth Taking Full Advantage of State Offerings and Challenging What Hinders Them,” the summit brought together various stakeholders, including NGOs and youth development agencies.

In celebration of Youth Month, the Govan Mbeki Municipality hosted a two-day Youth Summit at the Lillian Ngoyi Centre in Secunda from June 18 to 19.

The summit included the election of a new local South African Youth Council (SAYC).

Executive Mayor Nhlakanipho Zuma delivered the keynote address, urging the newly elected council to lead initiatives aimed at tackling youth challenges such as poverty, unemployment, substance abuse, and other social issues.

He emphasised that the SAYC must drive innovative solutions and development programmes to benefit the local youth.

Held under the theme “Youth Taking Full Advantage of State Offerings and Challenging What Hinders Them,” the summit brought together various stakeholders, including NGOs and youth development agencies.

Day one concluded with five commissions focused on key issues: youth unemployment and economic participation; education and skills development; health and wellbeing; youth political engagement and governance; and youth in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

On the second day, reports and recommendations from each commission were presented and adopted into a summit declaration and programme of action. The newly elected council will soon undergo induction training to prepare for the responsibilities ahead.
