Sasol postpones air quality meeting in eMbalenhle due to low turnout

Sasol’s June 25 public consultation on air quality was postponed after poor attendance and heated exchanges, with residents blaming the company for poor communication and calling for greater community involvement.

A poor community turnout on June 25 forced Sasol to postpone its scheduled public consultation meeting on air quality at the eMbalenhle Sasol Club.

Tensions flared before the postponement as a heated debate broke out between Sasol representatives and the few residents who were present.

Several residents blamed Sasol for the low attendance, accusing the company of poor coordination and inadequate communication regarding the meeting.

The attendees were divided on whether the meeting should continue.

Sasol eventually called for a vote among those present, and the majority voted in favour of a postponement. Following a brief caucus, Sasol confirmed it would postpone the meeting until further notice.

Some residents urged Sasol to involve community members directly in organising and publicising the next meeting to ensure better participation.

These air quality consultations with the community form part of the requirements under the Atmospheric Emission Licence (AEL).
