The Walter Kinnear Centre in Standerton is decaying

What was once a prestigious building, is now dilapidated.

The Walter Kinnear Centre, a municipal building intended for recreation and meetings, has been left to rot and fall victim to vandalism.

The centre was fitted with a kitchen, an oak bar, full sets of utensils, glassware, and several tables and chairs – most of which are now unaccounted for.

Overlooking the Vaal River, the building boasts beautiful views and a skylight that once filled the space with natural light. Today, it stands empty and unusable due to years of neglect.

During a fact-finding mission, the Standerton Advertiser found the once-functional kitchen in a state of disrepair. Ceiling lights had fallen to the floor, and expensive equipment, such as industrial ovens and stoves, was left in a poor state.

The oak bar is deteriorating due to mites gnawing at the wood. All utensils and glassware have been removed from the building, and only a few tables and chairs remain. DA Clr Deon Bekker said it was a mistake by the municipality to let the building fall into disrepair.

“This building was intended for municipal gatherings, but due to its condition, the municipality now incurs high costs renting alternative venues,” said Bekker.

He believes the venue could have generated income for the municipality if it had been rented out for events.

“The Walter Kinnear Centre follows the trend of other municipal buildings in Standerton: falling apart due to years of neglect and a lack of proper maintenance.”

Once a proud gathering place, it is now strewn with filth, empty beer bottles, and debris from the crumbling structure.

“This building is one example out of many that are currently falling apart because the municipality failed to do regular maintenance and upkeep.”

He explained that the key to long-term success is consistent upkeep and maintenance.

“Without maintenance, decay comes to a point where it is impossible to rebuild.”
