DA pushes Lekwa Municipality to work with CoGHSTA and investigate allegations

Fraud are believed to be running into the millions.

Recent fuel fraud allegations shook the Lekwa Local Municipality (LLM), prompting DA councillor Sithi Silosini to call for a forensic investigation.

An audit revealed discrepancies in the municipal fuel account, and the LLM launched an investigation to determine the extent of the fraudulent activities. Information about the fraud was made public on May 16, although the investigation had not yet begun.

On July 7, the DA urged municipal manager Malose Lamola to work with CoGHSTA to initiate an investigation into the matter. Allegations state that a well-organised syndicate has been operating within the Lekwa Municipality for over five years.

“It has come to light that municipal fuel cards are being used at local petrol stations,” said Silosini.

He said employees allegedly swiped their municipal fuel cards in the morning under the guise of filling up municipal vehicles. However, the suspected fraudsters would return later that day to fill up their vehicles.

According to Silosini, the systematic nature of the fraud makes it difficult to detect on paper, but the financial losses are estimated to run into the millions.

“This crime represents a severe blow to municipal resources and ultimately to service delivery for the people of Lekwa,” said Silosini.

The Hawks are investigating. However, Silosini believes the municipality must take responsibility by dismissing those involved and dismantling the syndicate. This crime is a direct violation of the Municipal Finance Management Act.

“Knowing the seriousness of this matter, we call on the Municipal Manager to push CoGHSTA to investigate, uncover the full extent of the syndicate’s operations, and ensure accountability,” said Silosini.

He concluded that residents of Lekwa deserve transparent governance and that those who misuse resources deserve to face the consequences.
