Department urges Standerton residents to use water sparingly

Grootdraai Dam’s water levels drop to below 100%.

The Department of Water and Sanitation released its weekly state of reservoirs report on July 9, urging residents to use water more sparingly, as Grootdraai Dam has shown a slight decline to 99.9%.

Most dams listed in the Gert Sibande District showed slight declines, with only Morgenstond Dam improving from 100.1% to 100.2%.
Vygeboom Dam remained steady at 100.0%.

Nooitgedacht Dam recorded a decline from 100.2% to 100.0%. Jericho Dam declined from 99.7% to 99.0%. Westoe Dam recorded a drop from 91.7% to 90.7%, and Heyshope Dam recorded a marginal decrease from 100.4% to 100.3%.

According to Wisane Mavasa, spokesperson for the DWS, Grootdraai Dam reflects the water levels in most dams across Mpumalanga.

The province’s average dam levels saw a slight decline from 99.2% to 99.0%, while the Gert Sibande District average dropped from 99.8% to 99.6%.

“While many of these changes appear marginal, they serve as a reminder that South Africa remains a water-scarce country,” stated Mavasa.

The DWS emphasised the importance of using water sparingly to ensure long-term sustainability.
